This blog so far has focused a lot on the benefits of empower women in a very big picture sense, but it is important not to forget the personal aspects of empowerment. Empowerment does not always have to be a part of sweeping global change, it can be as simple as two women supporting and empowering one another, or making better choices in your own life to empower yourself.
The following list contains some of those subtle, personal elements. You may notice a trend in these benefits. All of them very much link together, and often times one cannot exist without the other. They are still each their own distinct benefits, but they grow together and help us flourish, and empowerment is the surest way to nuture them.
Empowerment helps you gain self confidence. This seems like an obvious connection, but it might just be the most significant benefit. Having a healthy, stable self-confidence will bolster almost every aspect of a woman's life. It is impossible to live up to your full potential when you struggle to believe in yourself. This is the core of why empowerment is so important.
This one is definitely linked to self-confidence, but the ability to stand up for yourself and what you believe in is another key benefit. This isn't about picking fights, it's about actively asserting yourself to insure you are treated with respect, or even removing yourself from situations or relationships where that respect simply isn't present.
Courage is not just a matter of self-confidence. There will be times in your life that will be difficult and intimidating, and while courage often comes from within it also comes from knowing that you have a system of support and that others believe in you too, whether it be friends, family, or parts of society at large. Courage may come from within, but having a team behind you makes finding it so much easier.
Many women get bogged down by doubt, fear, and insecurity. When those previous aspects of confidence, assertiveness, and courage are absent it is easy for other negative aspects to take their place. Empowerment really is about the casting off of those toxic, negative thoughts and feelings and learning to replace them with positive, constructive ones. This is the process of self-discovery, but it can only take place if you break free and set out on the journey.
It's no surprise that better mental health leads to better physical health too. When we're empowered and gain confidence and learn to love ourselves, we want to keep improving, and we flourish all around. Conquering the stuff in our heads that hold us back opens the door to conquering physcial aspects as well. This isn't about losing weight or counting calories though, this is about truly living better. It's about fitness and health pursued because you deserve it and love yourself, not because society pushes you to look a certain way.
I hope these aspects strike a chord for you. I hope they anchor the concept of empowerment a little more in your mind. Empowerment is indeed an acitivity that should be pursued to the extent that it begins to create global change, but it does not start there. It starts in the individual people and relationships who make the choice to empower and be empowered. After that, slowly, like dominoes the effects will start to ripple outward, and that is how we change the world.
